Where to Get Boxes for Moving
You’re moving again. It’s only been a couple of years since the last move, but where did you get those moving boxes last time? Just enough time has passed to forget. Here’s a handy guide on where to get moving boxes near you in WNC, free and otherwise.
Free Moving Boxes Near Asheville
If you’ve got some time for running errands, there’s no need to pay for moving boxes. Free boxes abound—you need only to seek them out! We do know how precious and scarce time is, so here are a few Asheville and WNC favorites all collected in one place for you. If you’re too pressed for time to round up free boxes, we’ve also included some purchase options for you below.

															Asheville Transfer Station
The Asheville Transfer Station at 109 Hominy Creek Road is the clear winner. If it’s anywhere near you, this is the way to go! Thanks to a partnership with Beverly Hanks Realty, this county landfill way-station features a shed right near the entrance/exit that is well stocked with clean moving boxes at all times of day.
It’s a perfect solution because who among us doesn’t have an unreasonable amount of trash when moving? Two birds, one stone! Absolutely worth the trip, even if it’s a little distance from you; just be sure to check their hours before setting out.
Your Local Ingles
Whether you live near the Hingles, the Otingles, or the Enkles, you may get lucky if you stop into your neighborhood Ingles at the right time. (This goes for any grocery store, really.) Most Ingles stores have a large display in the cart foyer where they place boxes, so there’s no need to even go into the store. We’ve heard Monday morning is a lucky time, but it’s a good idea to call and ask. Or if you’re a planner-aheader, you can simply keep an eye on the box corner when you pop in to shop, now that you know it’s there.
Trader Joes @7PM
This one is straight from the annals of Reddit. The elders say that he who journeys to the northern reaches of the TJ realm at the thirteenth hour—7PM by Shire reckoning—will be rewarded with such mandarin chicken boxes as man nor hobbit has scarcely dreamed of.
Facebook Marketplace
While we might also call it Flakebook Marketplace for all the reliability of both buyers and sellers on that platform, free moving boxes are pretty straightforward. This might be a good choice if you’re back in the hills and not nearby to the transfer station or the Trader Joe’s of Reddit legend.
Navigate to Marketplace and either log in or set your location and radius. Search “moving boxes,” and you will most certainly see at least a couple of free offerings. These are often low-maintenance porch pickup arrangements in which you never even have to speak to a person.
Where to Buy Moving Boxes & Moving Supplies
Time is money, and we know not everyone has the leisurely afternoon hours to go scouting cardboard. So, without too much fanfare (it’s boxes, after all!), here is where to buy moving boxes in Asheville and Western North Carolina.
Asheville Area Movers!
Did you know you don’t have to DIY it? We can provide moving boxes, tape, bubble wrap, and all the other moving supplies AND pack your whole move for you! If you’re pressed for time, or just want your move to be easier, reach out to us for a fast quote. You may be surprised how affordable this option is.

															Lowe’s & Home Depot
If you’re already repairing the drywall where your child’s earliest parkour experimentation left a mark, then getting moving boxes at your local big box home improvement store might be very convenient. And of the non-free options, it might be the most affordable. Lowe’s and Home Depot sell them in bundles and carry a variety of sizes.
Amazon
Not local, totally corporate, and very easy. Just a little pricier than home improvement stores, this option brings the boxes right to your door, along with any other moving supplies you need. For convenience (if you’re packing yourself), it’s hard to beat! Be sure to check delivery date. Larger items can sometimes take up to a month, even for Prime members. (You might even consider something like these reusable moving bags, which reviewers seem to love.)
Uhaul & Other Big Moving Companies
You know we hate to send you here, but it’s an option! It is one of the more expensive ones, and there’s a good chance you’ll stand in line for 25 minutes while customers check their trucks in and out. One major advantage here, however, is that these stores stock all the moving supplies you could need, and you can have them today!
UPS & FedEx
UPS and FedEx are excellent shippers, but we would only buy moving supplies from them in a pinch! Their boxes are made for the rigors of warehouses, forklifts, and the open road, so they’re not cheap. But sometimes convenience trumps all other factors, and we want you to know these retailers are there for you if you need them.

															Beyond Moving Supplies
Whether or not you’re hiring a moving company, and whether or not it’s us, we hope this has helped make your move a little easier. Finding boxes is one of those small but necessary hurdles in the process, and knowing where to look can take one more thing off your list. Wherever you’re headed next, we wish you a smooth, well-packed journey. And we’re here if you need help!
